How to Deal with Loss and Grief
December 5, 2017
When dealing with a loss in life it is a very natural response to grieve. The loss might be the death of a loved one, a child leaving home, a miscarriage or the loss of a way of life.
Grief is a very powerful emotion, and whilst it is a natural reaction it can often be overwhelming and even consuming.
How can you get through grief and loss?
Grief hits different people in different ways, there is no defined timeframe and people’s reactions can vary significantly, but there are a few things you can do to assist with the grieving process.
- Use your support network. Talk to people about your feelings. Since grief has no timeframe you might consider joining a support group or speaking with a counsellor. Sometimes speaking to professionals or people in a similar situation can help provide clarity.
- It’s important to look after yourself. Grief can be exhausting and puts a toll on your body, and if you don’t look after yourself with a good diet and exercise your physical health can deteriorate quickly.
- Try to find enjoyment again. Whilst loss can be overwhelming, try not to let is consume you.
- Stop expecting yourself to snap out of it. When you realise that loss and grief are very real emotions that only time will heal you can start to take steps forward. Acknowledge that you will experience a myriad of emotions and whilst you might not be prepared for them, acknowledge each stage of the grieving process and see it as another way to move forward.
